South Holston Lake of East Tennessee

South Holston Lake is located on the South Fork Holston River in northeast Tennessee and southwest Virginia.

South Holston Lake includes many of Northeast Tennessee and Southwest Virginia’s most beatuiful vistas. It is the largest lake in the area and features spectacular views of of Holston Mountain, the peaks of which stretch up over 2,000 feet from lake level. The 7,580 acre lake includes 73% of shoreline on national forest land making it a quiet and majestic treat for visitors. The lake is home to many coves that area great for fishing or for spending a relaxing afternoon floating in a pontoon boat.

Many camping facilities, hiking trails, and picnic and recreational areas (2 county parks) provide opportunities to enjoy the spectacular scenery.

Since the lake crosses state lines, a special South Holston Lake Fishing License allows fishermen from both Tennessee and Virginia to fish anywhere on the lake without needing a license from both states.

South Holston Lake of East Tennessee is a TVA controlled reservoir, Visitors to South Holston Lake enjoy countless water sports, beautiful scenery and some of the best fishing in the area.

For those interested in renting a boat, we have a couple of links below to help in your search. Renting a boat can be a good option if you only need a boat once or twice a year, but keep in mind that the cost of a day’s rental is often more than an entire month’s membership in Carefree Boat Club!
